I spent a recent weekend curled up with a stack of decorating magazines. I read them cover to cover – usually back to front, but that’s the way I read most magazines and newspapers. I studied each photograph and tried to determine the particular design concept that was being presented. I looked at the number and placement of accessories, how and where arrangements of items were hung on the walls, choices of color and texture, and flooring selections. Each photo was scrutinized in the minutest detail. At some point I started to wonder for whom these absolutely gorgeous rooms were designed.

Bedside tables held no alarm clocks or clock radios. While there was usually an abundance of decorative items, there were no tissue boxes or eyeglass cases. Dressers displayed beautifully arranged floral creations and perhaps a cut glass perfume bottle or two, with ornamental stoppers. No jewelry boxes, no lotion bottles, none of the everyday stuff of life. I don’t know about you but I want a telephone at the side of my bed. And someplace handy for the TV remote.

Bookcase Headboards

And the bathrooms! Don’t even get me started on the bathrooms! Do the users of these bathrooms ever need to replace the toilet paper or the hand soap? Do they have their hair done weekly (maybe daily?) at beauty- or barber-shops and thus have no need of shampoo and conditioner bottles? Toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss? The men don’t have to shave and the women have no need of makeup? Streamlining and organization can only take you so far. Sooner or later you need a place for feminine supplies, room deodorizers, and the extra cotton balls and swabs that don’t fit into the pretty little designer containers. And I can’t be the only person who thinks that a plunger should be stored someplace handy to the location of possible need.

Decorating for Real Life and Real People

No cords for the lamps, no tangle of wires for the home office computer system. One photograph featured an elegant “work space” with a large bouquet of flowers drooping fetchingly over the printer. I could imagine spent blossoms dropping into the works, and I couldn’t imagine how to open the paper tray without knocking the vase over. I suppose the person who would work at such a desk would have no need of a mouse pad, paper clips, or a pile of sticky notes. I wish I could work like that.

I want to know what the rooms in the photographs look like a week later. Are the same three Granny Smith apples still in perfect position on the glass-topped table? Is the fringe on the cashmere afghan still draped just so over the arm of the rocking chair in the baby’s room? Does the kitchen counter look bare without the tureen of soup and the matching soup bowls? I mean, the soup was eaten, wasn’t it? Am I losing my perspective here?

Show me a playroom after the children have been forced to put away the toys. I’ll bet there are no cunning arrangements of stuffed animals having tea, and the blocks aren’t stacked into just-right pyramids with one block placed in front and a little to the side. The pillows are all over the room and the bedspread is trailing onto the floor. That’s real.

I realize that the decorating magazines present rooms and arrangements that are idealized and stylized. They are intended to give our imaginations a jumping-off point; we are meant to adapt their ideas to our own needs. They do a wonderful job and I will continue to peruse the glossy pages of each publication. Occasionally, however, I’d appreciate a view of a real room, spiffed up for company, perhaps, but real. I want to be able to imagine waking up to the clock radio, to see myself sitting at the computer and actually getting some work done, to know where I would store the supply of makeup without which I cannot face the world. I want to think that I could actually live in the room. Isn’t that the point of the whole exercise? Don’t we all want comfortable homes that suit our life styles, organized and better looking, maybe, but still us?

Go take a look at the pictures in a decorating magazine. See if you agree with me. I think I’m going to go clean out a couple of drawers and straighten a bookcase shelf or two. It won’t end up picture perfect, but it will be real.

A grand foyer provides plenty of space for decorative touches that preview what is to come throughout the rest of the home. But many homes do not have a large foyer separated from the rest of the home by architectural features. Very often the ‘foyer’ is a simple entry space directly in front of the door. Unfortunately, it can become an overflow space full of outerwear and shoes, but with a little planning and creativity, it is possible to give a small entry its very own definitive style.

Create Definition with Style

Bookcase Headboards

A small entry is typically an extension of the living room with no real separation from the living area. A low-profile double-sided bookcase can be used as a half-wall when placed perpendicular to the doorway. Use the lowest shelf to store shoes and add stylish wicker baskets or fabric colored boxes to hold keys, cell phones, mail and other everyday items that go in and out of the house. The top shelf can be used to your decorative advantage, displaying decorative accessories, such as figurines, small sculpture, plants or candles.

Creative Ideas For a Small Entry

Expand the Entry with Wall Mirrors

Choose a framed wall mirror that accents the style of the adjacent living space and hang it next to the door. The mirror will reflect any light that comes through windows and it will make the space seem larger and brighter. It also offers a convenient place to check your appearance before heading out the door.

Decorating with Low-Profile Wrought Iron Wall Decor

In a small entry the last thing you need is imposing wall art or frames that protrude into what little space is available. Wrought iron wall art is the perfect solution for adding style and dimension that stays flush against the wall. The open nature of wrought iron allows the wall to show through, adding contrast and keep the look airy and elegantly simple. Wrought iron wall décor can be found in many different styles, colors, shapes and sizes. Try an appropriately sized piece above the door for distinction that will add the illusion of height. Or try a grouping of smaller pieces on a wall to complement a framed mirror or pair of wrought iron wall sconces.

Other Decorative Options

•	If floor space is ample, a small console or hall table will add decorative flair to the entry. Whether your style is Craftsman, Contemporary or Country, a small entry table will provide a base for additional stylish accents. Table art sculpture, small accessories or candles in distinctive holders can be gathered on the table to create a stylish vignette. When arranged below a framed wall mirror, the beauty of the sculpture and accessories will gain new and exciting perspectives. A small basket or ceramic dish will provide a convenient location for dropping keys, mail, or cell phones.
•	Smaller entry spaces can gain distinction through the inclusion of a pedestal of marble, metal, granite, or plaster. Use it to elevate table art sculpture to new heights, or enhance floral themes with a beautiful vase overflowing with fresh fragrant flowers.
•	Wall shelves of appropriate depth can often be accommodated if there is wall space that is free of the path of the door. Displayed near eye level wall shelves provide well-situated display space for small sculpture, framed art and photos and other distinctive accessories.

Imagine a boat where all of the weight was shifted to one side. What would happen to the balance of that boat?

Balance in a room is the same thing. It’s affected by two things:

The size of the furniture
The placement of the furnitureIf most of the furniture is either very tall, very short, top heavy or bottom heavy, the room will be off-balance vertically.

Bookcase Headboards

If most of the big (tall and/or wide) furniture is on one side of the room, the room will be off-balance horizontally.

Don’t Rock the Boat – Finding the Right Balance in a Room With Furniture

While balance in a room is also determined by and affected by the color and style of the furniture, as well as the use of and color and style of art and decorative accessories, we will limit this discussion to furniture size and placement in a living room.

1. Start with the big pieces first. By this we mean sofas and loveseats. Assuming you already have a sofa and/or loveseats, place these first in the room, near to the focal point so as to emphasize it and not block it. A focal point can be a fireplace, an entertainment center, or a window with a view.

If you don’t already have one, then a sofa and/or loveseat is the first item(s) to purchase since it will determine the style, color, and size of all of the other pieces in the room. Also, take measurements of the sofa in case you intend on purchasing chairs, rugs, artwork and cocktail, end and sofa tables.

You should also be aware that the style of the sofa/loveseat will determine its visual weight. For example, a sleek modern sofa with straight lines, legs instead of a skirt, and straight arms, will have less weight than a sofa with a curved back, rolled arms and a skirt along the bottom.

2. Add Chairs. The simplest way to achieve balance is to add two matching or color-complementary chairs to the sofa or loveseat seating arrangement.

Upholstered chairs, whether club style or slipper style, provide better visual balance to a sofa than a pair of wooden chairs.

But make sure that the height of the chairs is no more than 5 inches taller or shorter than the height of the back of the couch/loveseat.

3. Add Tables: The next items to add to the seating arrangement are the end tables and cocktail table.

End tables should be no more than 2 ½ to 3 inches higher or lower than the arms of the sofa or chairs to provide balance.

Also, if the couch has its legs exposed rather than being skirted, then this visual lightness can be balanced by an end table with small legs or one with no legs, such as a cube, a small chest with drawers or an end table with shelves.

A cocktail table should take up 2/3 to ¾ the width of the couch. A sofa table behind the couch is optional, however it too should not exceed 2/3 to ¾ of the width of the couch nor be higher than the back of the couch.

4. Tall bookcases, armoires, entertainment centers, wall units. These are the items that can have a dramatic impact on the balance of the room, and because of their height and mass, must be balanced out.

For example, an armoire or single large bookcase, both of which are taller than they are wide, can be balanced out if there is a fireplace with a piece of art or a mirror hung over the mantle on the opposite side of the room.

A tall and wide entertainment center or a bank of bookshelves can be balanced out on the other side of the room by adding some vertical and horizontal weight to either side of the fireplace. This can be accomplished by adding a chest and artwork hung over it to both sides of the fireplace.

For the professed bibliophile, several books are not enough. If they can not dedicate a whole room in their house to books, they will in general change both their drawing room and their bedroom into quasi-libraries. An amazing place to keep books in the bedroom in on a king size bookcase headboards to suit each ones choice.

There are several various collections of king size bookcase headboards. Several are multi-use shelves. On the lowly subdivision will be a sill hidden by a descending sheet. This can double like a backrest or conceal added bedcovers, Kleenexes, or everything else you don’t want on reveal. The upper shelves may then be filled with books. Lot bookcase headboards have their bookshelves safeguarded by descending plexiglass. This makes the double purpose storing your books free from dirt and keeping your head away from falling books. Past these practical apprehensions, a few headboards are huge and mimic a floor to roof bookshelf. Others are petite and include a top broad enough to display knickknacks (or extra books!) above them. If you choose a king size bookcase headboard you need to have sufficient gap to store your preferred books handy.

Bookcase Headboards

You are able to select to build your king size headboard either separate or attached, it’s really your decision. It may be alluring just to keep a large bookcase on back your bed. But, if your ground is uneven or your bed moves, you can risk toppling the total stuff of the bookshelf on your bed. If you pick to use a detached bookcase, ascertain you bolt it to your bed surrounding. This selection even gives you greater freedom of designs.

If you’re looking to decorate your bedroom in order to give it a more modern and contemporary look, one of the best ways to go about it is to buy or even create a new headboard. However what is a headboard in the first place?

A wall headboard makes the bed look complete. Also it gives it a very attractive look, depending on the type you will use. There standard types but also wall decor types which of course are a bit more expensive to buy.

Bookcase Headboards

Many homeowners like to make them the focal point of the room by adding it functionality as well as appeal. If you like to read in your bedroom, you could use a bookcase headboards as they are available in several styles in a Western look, a traditional or even an Asian look. When you don’t need the divider, you can fold it flat and simply slip it between the wall and your bed.

It is a fact that this item can make a huge impact in your bedroom and choosing the right one is not only a matter of price but also of style. After all you are sleeping in the bedroom night after night so you want the room to be as nice and functional as possible.

There are currently two sizes available on the market: a full size which easily fit single as well as double beds, and also a queen size which fits queen and king size beds without effort. The size you buy will depend, of course, on the size of the bed you are sleeping on. Interior design and decorating of your bedroom has never been easier!

You can probably relate to your child’s words because most parents have fond memories of bunk and trundle beds from their own childhood. For several generations, kids bunk beds have been one of the most popular bed choice for a child’s room. Most adults can remember sleepovers that involved a set of bunk beds. From the moment you saw that double-decker arrangement, hundreds of possibilities and adventures would immediately race through your mind. Now it’s time that you allowed your children to experience the same kind of magical wonder that you once enjoyed.

Bookcase Headboards

Who could not be impressed by the sleek, cool style and fun appearance of a set of these multi-level beds? Of course the top bunk instantly sends a child’s imagination into overdrive. It’s a simple matter for them to believe that the top bunk is the cockpit of an airplane, a flying carpet or the interior of a Star Wars spacecraft. They can soar off to new adventures any time they clamber up the ladder and sit on the top bunk. There is just something incredibly thrilling and exciting to a kid when they get to sleep on a bed that is so close to the ceiling, even if that top bunk is really just a few short feet from the bedroom floorboards.

The bottom bunk also has some unique “adventure” qualities that kids appreciate. You can not overlook the special appeal of the lower bunk for kids that are a little unsure about climbing the ladder to that taller bunk. The lower bunk is also a perfect site for friends to sit and talk, listen to music or play a game. Many kids want to arrange blankets and sheets around the edges to create a special, hidden clubhouse and the design of these beds makes this an easy task to accomplish.

You can use these bed sets for several children but they make ideal bedroom furniture even if you just have one kid at home. With a bunk bed set you are giving them instant adventure and 2 beds for the price of one. Everyone knows that kids can get bored easily and being able to alternate where they will sleep is a lot of fun for kids of all ages. They can choose to settle down for the night in the bottom bunk where they can go to sleep in a bed surrounded by draped material that protects and hides them from the outside world. If they long for more adventure, they may want to choose the top bunk where they can drift off to sleep only a few inches away from a ceiling that may be covered with glow in the dark stickers of stars and planets to which they can travel.

There are a number of more practical features of kids bunk beds that will appeal to the sensibilities of a parent including:

Additional storage room
Space saving furniture design
Affordable Cost
Sturdy Construction
Kid Friendly appeal
Kids bunk beds with the twin over twin construction design remains a popular model but you also have other options. If you have several children at home you may want to choose a twin over full bunk bed which can be used for the sleeping needs of 2-4 children. It is possible to find a good variety of bunk beds with a modern twist such as those with a twin over futon design.

Other popular options include loft beds and kids full size bunk beds that provide amazing versatility. These sets are designed to grow with your child and if you are considering bunk bed sets for your kids then you may want to give these bed styles some serious thought.

If durability and sturdy construction are the most important features that you are looking for then you will definitely want to browse through the different selections of kids wood bunk beds that are available.
Are you looking for a fresh new home decorating idea that’s not going to break your bank? Turn existing mis-matched items already found around your house into beautifully coordinated home decor.

All you need is some wallpaper primer and Paper Illusions…plus a few simple application tools. Before you roll your eyes at the idea of wallpapering, let me explain first about this product. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before…meaning traditional wallpaper. And it’s not just for walls!

Bookcase Headboards

WHAT IS PAPER ILLUSIONS?

Home Interior Decorating Idea – Faux Finishing Made Easy With Paper Illusions

Paper Illusions or PaperIllusion(tm) is a faux finish wallpaper product by Village specifically made for the purpose of ripping or tearing into pieces and decorating various surfaces. Instead of measuring, cutting and matching strips, paper illusions is torn into pieces and applied in an overlapping manner creating a true textured, faux finish effect. It comes in over 30 colors/patterns.

This specially formulated breathable paper is pre-pasted with an adhesive that sticks to itself making application of the product very easy…you just tear it, dip it in water and apply it to your surface…no other glue is needed.

A wallpaper primer is used to coat the surface before application. This is crucial to insure that it adheres properly.

Paper Illusions, although most often used for decorating walls, can also be used in decorating any clean, flat dry surface. This includes but is not limited to paneling, wood, metal, glass, concrete, cardboard and plastic. If the surface is likely to be handled often or exposed to moisture it is recommended to follow the application with a few coats of a water-based polyurethane. This is used to seal the application. Otherwise you can just leave it as is.

When I say it’s not just for walls, I mean you can decorate your counter tops, floors, furniture & fixtures with it. You can create architectural details such as faux (fake) marble columns out of PVC pipes and some wood. And you can turn garage sale trash into classy-looking treasures. So when you think of paper illusions, don’t think wallpaper…think a multi-purpose pre-pasted decorative paper.

SIMPLE DECORATING IDEAS

Let’s just say your not ready to redo your walls or resurface your kitchen counters, but you want to tie some basic elements in each room together to give an appealing well-balanced decor throughout your home. Here are some simple decorating ideas:

Kitchen/Dining Area: Gather up some cheap wooden bowls and old glass or metal canisters/jars and apply the Paper Illusions to create a chic coordinating set. Use bowls as a table centerpiece to hold fruit, pine cones, or nuts. You can even put one on the coffee table or fireplace mantle in the living room to tie into other rooms. Use the canisters/jars to hold dry goods, such as flour, sugar & salt. Place a few in the bathroom to hold cotton balls, swabs & personal items.

Bedroom: Do you have some furniture pieces that need a face lift? A nightstand, a headboard, a dresser or vanity. You can refinish that furniture with Paper Illusions. How about picture frames you can mount on your walls or set on the night stand? You can cover the photo mattes within currently matching frames or actually cover plain mismatched frames to create a matching set.

Living Room: Do you have some furniture pieces here that need a face lift? A coffee table or some end tables, a bookcase or some shelving unit or a beat-up entertainment center. You can refinish this furniture as well or just portions of it, like a table top or individual shelves. How about some knick knacks like a glass vase, a wooden tray, or a plastic bin…all of these can be easily covered with this decorative paper. Lamp shades & light switches…why not?

Home Office: Surely you have some cardboard boxes you can turn into beautiful storage bins. You can cover a plastic cup to hold your pens, the shade on your desk lamp and the drab looking wastepaper basket…creating a beautifully coordinated set. Do you have a rusty old file cabinet that’s a complete eyesore…convert that too!

Bathroom: Surely you have a waste basket in here. And what about that plastic toilet bowl scrubber & stand sitting behind the toilet…and a tissue box. You can cover all of these (and seal them with a polyurethane to protect from moisture) to have a matching set.

I can go on and on, but you’ve got the idea. This decorative faux finish wallpaper is a beginning home decorator’s best friend. Try something simple and see for yourself how easy it is to create beautiful coordinating pieces from stuff you already own. Full 85 square foot rolls are available at most wallpaper stores.

When purchasing furniture for your children, you are probably looking for

something fun, inexpensive, and durable. Well, bedroom sets are a good way to

go. Since they are specially made for kids, the beds are smaller than the

average adult bed, and the color schemes are often brighter and flashier, and

much more fun.

Life will be easier if you buy the furniture in sets. This is because all the

furniture will match in color and style, so you only need to go shopping once!

Also, discounts automatically occur when you purchase pieces together rather

than as separate components.

Bookcase Headboards

Childrens bedroom sets are made with kids in mind, so they are specially crafted

to be durable. A set can include some of the following furniture: computer desk,

chest of drawers with shelves to go above it, twin sized bed (some which turn

into bunk beds or loft beds), a bedside table, vanity set, bookcase, mirror, and

a wall shelf.

Design Your Kid’s Room With A Bedroom Set – It’s Cheap, Easy, And Fun!

None of the sets come with mattresses, and depending on the age of your child,

the size of the mattress will vary. If your child is a reader, order a bed and

headboard that doubles as a bookshelf. Create a getaway underneath a loft bed

with a desk, bean bag chair and some of their favorite treasures.

There are some sets designed specifically for babies, toddlers, older children,

and teenagers.

If you’re looking at cribs, you can have the option of different finials on the

crib posts. Choices include balls, stars, airplanes, “bunnies”, and flowers in

black, navy, white, and cherry red.

For older children, your choice may depend entirely on the gender of your child.

Pretty pink frills, flower gardens and fairy princess designs are a favorite

with some little girls, while others prefer a rough and tumble fire engine, race

car or castle theme.

If you prefer to decorate in colors of your own choice and want the furniture to

be neutral, there are plenty of sets that come in basic white, and light or dark

wood veneers. Pine is a common wood used for kids beds because it’s attractive

and serviceable.

Although the extra furniture with the bed is important, when purchasing the set,

the bed is the most important thing to consider. Choose between loft beds,

bunks, captain beds, twin or full-sized, toddler size beds, and cribs. Most of

them are made of wood, but you can find ones that are made of wrought iron in

original patterns.

The majority of the sets contain multiple drawers for all of the knick knacks

(treasures, gifts) that children pick up over the years. Although children don’t

often want “classy” to rule the day, there are some sets that do that and look

like a child’s bedroom at the same time. The children’s bedroom sets can come in different

styles such as country, ranch, renaissance, and rattan.
